About Meals on Wheels for Fort Collins

Our organization was established in 1969 by a small group of concerned citizens. When Loveland/Berthoud Meals on Wheels began their operation in 1968 (the first Meals on Wheels program west of the Mississippi), these community members realized that homebound residents in Fort Collins could also benefit from such a program.

The program launched in November 1969, under the direction of Mary Nittmann. Office duties were performed at Mary’s kitchen table and a handful of volunteers helped deliver meals. Meals were prepared at the local Elks Club. The need for our service quickly outgrew the Elks Club’s kitchen, at which point Poudre Valley Hospital took over the meal preparation. Poudre Valley Hospital continues to be a vital partner in providing meals for our clients.

Meals on Wheels for Fort Collins became a 501(c)(3) non-profit agency in 1971, and is generously supported by individuals, grants, and fundraisers.

For the past 42 years, our program has continued to thrive and provide this essential service to our community. Our services include a nutritious meal, friendly conversation, and a well-being check on each delivery day. We have helped so many people live right where they want to be, in their home and independent.

The Meals on Wheels dedicated staff works hard to ensure that deliveries run smoothly and efficiently with the help of a fleet of amazing volunteers. We now have over 200 volunteers helping deliver meals and smiles to over 350 clients each year. Often, local groups, such as schools and youth and corporate volunteer programs help put together small gifts at holidays and other times during the year; an extra something special to brighten our clients’ day.

Changing times may bring about program adjustments, but it is the very basic needs of our aging and health-challenged citizens that never change. Making their lives more manageable is so important and why our organization exists.
